Quick answer: Aspen to Denver International Airport takes about 3.5 hours in summer via Independence Pass and about 4 hours in winter via Glenwood Springs — because Independence Pass closes for the season. For a domestic flight, leave Aspen 6.5 hours before departure in summer and 7 to 7.5 hours in winter. This is the longest and least forgiving mountain transfer in Colorado.

Aspen has two routes, and the season decides which

This is the detail that catches almost everyone out, and it’s the reason a Vail or Breckenridge timing guide won’t work for Aspen.

Independence Pass, the direct route over Highway 82, climbs to 12,095 feet — one of the highest paved through-roads in the country. It closes for winter, typically from around early November until late May, and it can shut temporarily after any early or late storm.

When it’s closed, you go the long way around: north through Glenwood Springs and east on I-70. That adds roughly 60 miles and an hour.

Note the vehicle restriction. Independence Pass has length limits, so larger vans and buses take the Glenwood route regardless of season. If your group needs a Sprinter, you’re on I-70 in July as well as January — build the extra hour in.

Departure time by flight time

Work backwards from your flight. Assumes a domestic departure with a 2-hour airport buffer.

Add another hour for international flights, checked ski bags, Sunday travel in ski season, or forecast snow anywhere on the route.

Those pre-dawn departures for early flights are not a typo. If your flight leaves DIA before 9am in winter, you’re leaving Aspen in the middle of the night — which is a strong argument for either a later flight or an overnight in Denver. Call (720) 694-7791 and dispatch will work it out against your specific flight.

Where the winter route slows down

SegmentDistanceClearWinter / peak
Aspen to Glenwood Springs~40 mi45–55 min60–90 min
Glenwood Canyon~15 mi15 min20 min – closure
Glenwood to Vail~60 mi60 min75–120 min

Tunnel to Denver~50 mi50 min75–135 min
Denver to DIA~25 mi30 min40–50 min
Total~235 mi~4 hrs5–7 hrs

Three separate failure points sit on this route: Glenwood Canyon, which is narrow, follows the Colorado River, and closes for rockfall and mudslides with no practical detour; Vail Pass at 10,662 feet; and the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 feet.

Vail and Breckenridge travellers face one or two of these. Aspen travellers face all three. That’s the entire justification for the longer buffer.

Should you fly out of ASE or EGE instead?

A fair guide has to raise this, because for many trips it’s the better answer.

Flight optionsVery limitedLimited, seasonalExtensive
FaresHighestHighLowest
Weather cancellationsFrequent — mountain approachOccasionalRare
Best forShort trips, price no objectMiddle groundCheap fares, reliability, connections

ASE sits ten minutes from town but is genuinely weather-sensitive — its mountain approach means cancellations and diversions happen with some regularity in winter. Travellers stranded by an ASE cancellation frequently end up making the DIA drive anyway, at short notice and at a worse hour.

The honest summary: ASE is convenient when it works. DIA is reliable and cheaper but costs you half a day. EGE splits the difference. If your trip has no schedule flexibility — a connecting international flight, a Monday morning meeting — DIA with a booked car is the safer plan.

Our Eagle County Airport guide covers EGE in more detail.

Cost

VehiclePassengersTypical flat rate
Luxury SUV1–6$650–$900
Premium van7–14$850–$1,200

Ranges reflect the Aspen–Denver corridor and vary by season, route and group size. Winter routing via Glenwood is longer and priced accordingly. For a firm quote call (720) 694-7791 or see our rates.

This is the highest-priced ground transfer in Colorado, and it should be — it’s a four-hour drive across three mountain hazards. But the rate covers the vehicle, not the seat. Six people in one SUV works out well under $150 each, which compares favourably with six shared shuttle seats plus the fixed schedule and intermediate stops that come with them.

Seven things that prevent a missed flight

  1. Confirm which route you’re on. Ask when booking. Independence Pass open or closed changes your departure time by an hour.
  2. Check CDOT the night before and again on the morning — for Glenwood Canyon closures and I-70 traction restrictions.
  3. Book when you book the flight. 48 hours minimum; 7 to 14 days for holidays, ski-season weekends and events like the X Games.
  4. Consider an overnight in Denver for any flight before 9am in winter. A hotel near DIA costs less than a missed international connection and saves a midnight departure.
  5. Declare ski bags and oversized luggage. Also flag if you need a large van — that forces the Glenwood route in any season.
  6. Give the exact building and unit, and mention steep or gated access.
  7. Be outside ten minutes early. The buffer is built for three mountain passes, not the driveway.

Breaking up the drive

Four hours is long, and the winter route passes several worthwhile stops. If your flight is late enough, an hourly booking with a stop turns a chore into part of the trip:

These are hourly bookings rather than straight transfers. Call (720) 694-7791 to arrange. For more on the area, see our guide to Aspen’s best golf clubs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Aspen to Denver airport?

About 3.5 hours in summer via Independence Pass, and about 4 hours in winter via Glenwood Springs. Winter weather or heavy I-70 traffic can push it to 5 to 7 hours.

What time should I leave Aspen for my flight?

Six and a half hours before a domestic departure in summer, seven to seven and a half in winter. Add an hour for international flights, ski bags or forecast snow. Call (720) 694-7791 to have dispatch set it precisely.

Is Independence Pass open in winter?

No. It closes seasonally, typically from around early November until late May, and can shut temporarily after storms outside that window. When it’s closed, the route runs via Glenwood Springs and I-70.

How much is a car service from Aspen to DIA?

Typically $650–$900 for a luxury SUV carrying up to six, and $850–$1,200 for a van carrying up to fourteen. Flat rate per vehicle, not per person.

Can I take an Uber from Aspen to Denver airport?

Very rarely. A four-hour run with an unpaid return leg is one most rideshare drivers decline, and mountain vehicle requirements add further problems. Pre-booking is effectively the only reliable option.

Should I fly out of Aspen airport instead of Denver?

ASE is ten minutes from town but has limited flights, higher fares, and a weather-sensitive mountain approach that produces regular winter cancellations. DIA is cheaper and far more reliable at the cost of a four-hour drive. If your schedule has no slack, DIA with a booked car is safer.

Do you pick up from Snowmass, Basalt or Carbondale?

Yes — all sit on the Glenwood route and are served on the same corridor. Give your exact address at booking: (720) 694-7791.
