Why A-Basin Opens So Early
Elevation. The base sits at 10,780 feet and the summit at 13,050 feet — among the highest lift-served terrain in North America. The air stays colder for longer, snowmaking can start sooner, and much of the terrain faces north, which protects snow from the sun.
The same geography gives A-Basin Colorado’s longest season. Last winter ran 204 days, from 26 October to 17 May.

Where Things Stand Right Now
As of mid-September, there was no base and overnight lows were still above freezing. That is normal for September — snowmaking typically begins in early October once nights turn consistently cold. The first real signal will be the snow guns running; the announcement usually follows within days.
Plan Ahead: Tickets and Parking
This is the A-Basin detail most first-timers miss. All A-Basin lift tickets must be bought online and in advance, and quantities may be limited to manage crowds. The resort also runs parking reservations.
On opening day that matters twice over. You need a ticket before you set off, and you need either a parking plan or a ride that removes the problem. A drop-off at the base means no reservation to chase and no lot to circle.
Getting to A-Basin: The Two-Route Resort
A-Basin is the only major Colorado resort you can reach two ways from Denver.
