No Colorado resort has opened yet for 2026/27, and none has announced a firm date. Keystone is the favourite — it took the title last season and is chasing it again — but Arapahoe Basin, Loveland, Winter Park and Wolf Creek are all live contenders. The realistic window is mid-October through early November, and the winner will be decided by a handful of cold nights.

Why Keystone Is the Favourite

Vail Resorts has stated that Keystone plans to open as soon as possible in October and hopes to claim the title of first resort open in North America for the second year running. That is an explicit, public commitment to the race, and the mountain has the snowmaking capacity and the institutional will to back it.

Last season Keystone delivered. It opened on October 25, 2025 — its earliest start since 1997 — running a three-hour afternoon session on more than two miles of groomed terrain.

Why Arapahoe Basin Might Take It Back

A-Basin is the most persistent early opener in the state and it does not announce far ahead. It sits at high elevation, holds cold well, and has taken the title repeatedly.

It also came within a day of winning last season. A-Basin announced it would open Sunday, October 26. Keystone, which had said nothing all week, then posted that it was opening in an hour and a half — and took the title that same afternoon.

A-Basin’s earliest opening on record is October 9, 2022. If a cold snap arrives in early October, it is entirely capable of settling this before anyone else is ready.

The Wildcards

Loveland Ski Area sits high on the Continental Divide with strong snowmaking and a long history of October openings. It is targeting roughly mid-October into early November.

Winter Park has left its date open, describing opening day simply as “as soon as possible,” and matched its earliest opening ever in a recent season.

Wolf Creek is the one nobody predicts. It relies on natural snow rather than snowmaking, and when a southern Colorado storm lands early, it can jump the entire field — as it did on October 22, 2024, beating both Keystone and A-Basin that year.

Who Has Opened First: Recent History

SeasonFirst in ColoradoDate
2025/26KeystoneOctober 25
2024/25Wolf CreekOctober 22
2023/24Arapahoe BasinOctober 29
2022/23Arapahoe BasinOctober 9

The pattern is clear: this is decided in the second half of October, and the winner changes year to year.

What Actually Decides It

Not marketing. Not snowfall totals. Cold nights.

Snowmaking needs sustained freezing temperatures, typically overnight and for several days running. A warm October pushes everyone back. A single hard cold snap pulls the whole field forward. One large early storm can rewrite the calendar in a weekend.

This is why the contenders refuse to commit to dates months out. It is not coyness — the information genuinely does not exist until a few days beforehand.

How Much Notice Will You Get?

Very little. Keystone’s communications team has said publicly that the resort often does not know its opening day until around 24 hours ahead, sometimes less. Last season the public announcement came roughly 90 minutes before the lifts turned.

So if being on the hill for the first day matters to you, the planning has to happen now — before there is anything to plan around.

Transport is the piece most people leave too late. Opening day sends a sudden surge of traffic up I-70 on almost no notice, and every one of these resorts except Winter Park sits beyond the Eisenhower Tunnel — the corridor’s main bottleneck.

What Opening Day Is Really Like

Manage expectations. An October opening in Colorado usually means:

People go for the moment, not the skiing. If you want a real ski day, the November dates serve you far better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ski resort opens first?

It varies. Keystone took the title in 2025, Wolf Creek in 2024, and Arapahoe Basin in 2023 and 2022. Keystone is the stated favourite for 2026.

Has any resort opened yet?

Not as of September 16, 2026. No Colorado mountain has announced a firm opening date.

Why is Keystone the favourite?

Vail Resorts has publicly stated Keystone aims to open as soon as possible in October and wants the first-in-North-America title for a second straight year. It won last season on October 25.

Could a smaller resort beat them?

Yes. Wolf Creek relies on natural snow and jumped the whole field on October 22, 2024. A well-timed southern Colorado storm can settle it unexpectedly.

How do I get to opening day on short notice?

Have a transport plan set before the announcement, then confirm immediately. Private transfers from Denver are available to all the contenders — call (720) 694-7791.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle in October?

Colorado’s traction law requires adequate tyres or AWD/4WD on I-70 during declared winter conditions. Early-season visitors are frequently caught out. Booking a compliant vehicle avoids the problem — call (720) 694-7791.
