Ask anyone who works at a Colorado resort which weekend is busiest and they won’t say Christmas. A Presidents Day ski trip in Colorado lands on what is, by most measures, the most crowded three days of the season — because the holidays spread themselves across two weeks while this compresses an entire nation’s long weekend into seventy-two hours.
Presidents’ Day falls on Monday 15 February 2027. Call (720) 694-7791.

Why It’s Busier Than Christmas
Christmas week brings more people to Colorado overall, but they arrive across a fortnight and stay for days at a time. The mountain is full, but the roads handle it in waves.
Presidents’ Day does the opposite. Everyone arrives Friday, skis Saturday and Sunday, and leaves Monday. There’s no spread. Resort parking fills before 9am on the Saturday, lift lines are at their season peak, and I-70 carries three days of traffic at both ends.
It also sits in February, when conditions are usually excellent — so it draws people who’d otherwise skip a holiday weekend. Good snow and a long weekend is a combination that fills a mountain.
The Monday Problem, Again
Same trap as MLK weekend, and people fall into it twice a season.
Most skiers have internalised that Sunday afternoon is the worst drive of the week. On a three-day weekend that’s wrong — Sunday is a normal ski day because nobody needs to be home for Monday morning, and the whole departure shifts to Monday afternoon.
| Day | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Thu 11 Feb | Quiet — the smart arrival |
| Fri 12 Feb | Heavy westbound from early afternoon |
| Sat 13 Feb | Peak crowds, lots full before 9am |
| Sun 14 Feb | Busy mountain, calm roads |
| Mon 15 Feb | Mass departure — the hard day |
If you’re flying home Monday evening, add an hour to your usual buffer. Six hours before a domestic departure from Vail, five and a half to six from Summit County, seven from Aspen. Our departure guides for Vail to DIA and Breckenridge to DIA have the full tables.

Planning a Presidents Day Ski Trip in Colorado
Three decisions make the difference, and all of them are about avoiding the crowd rather than enduring it.
Arrive Thursday. One extra night buys a clear drive and a full Friday on a mountain that hasn’t filled yet. It’s the single highest-value change you can make.
Ski Sunday and Monday, not Saturday. Saturday is the peak. Sunday is busy but better, and Monday morning is noticeably quieter as people start packing.
Leave Monday morning or Tuesday. Monday before 10am beats Monday afternoon by hours. Tuesday is empty.
Where to Go If You Can Choose
The big Summit County resorts — Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper — take the heaviest Front Range day-trip traffic because they’re closest. Vail and Beaver Creek are further out and draw more destination visitors, which shifts the pattern slightly but doesn’t reduce it.
Winter Park is the structural exception on a holiday weekend, and it’s underrated for exactly this reason. It’s reached over Berthoud Pass on US 40 rather than through the Eisenhower Tunnel, which sidesteps the single worst bottleneck on the corridor. Our Winter Park guide covers the route.
Steamboat and Aspen are far enough out that the day-trip crowd doesn’t reach them, though the drive is longer at both ends.
Booking Windows
Six to eight weeks for a single vehicle, eight to ten for a van or multiple vehicles. That puts the decision in December — which is why this post exists in October rather than February.
Presidents’ Day competes with MLK weekend four weeks earlier and with the start of spring break three weeks later, so it isn’t an isolated spike. Operators are running a sustained busy stretch through February and March, and the holiday weekends are where capacity genuinely runs out.
Our guide to when to book a ski shuttle in Colorado covers the season’s full pattern.
February Weather
Mid-February is deep winter in Colorado. Storms are frequent, snowpack is usually at its best of the season, and the passes close more often than at any other point.
The traction law is active on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison, and CDOT can escalate to a chain law during severe storms. Check COtrip.org before travelling — our traction law guide has the requirements.
A storm on the Monday turns a long drive into a very long one. The buffer you built is what gets you to the airport.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Presidents Day weekend 2027?
Friday 12 to Monday 15 February 2027, with Presidents’ Day on the Monday.
Is it really the busiest ski weekend?
On the mountain, generally yes. Christmas brings more people overall but spreads them across two weeks; Presidents’ Day compresses a long weekend into three days.
What’s the worst travel day?
Monday afternoon eastbound. The mass departure shifts from Sunday to Monday on a three-day weekend.
Which resort is least affected by traffic?
Winter Park, reached over Berthoud Pass rather than through the Eisenhower Tunnel.
How far ahead should I book?
Six to eight weeks for a single vehicle, eight to ten for a van. That means booking in December. Call (720) 694-7791.
Should I ski Saturday?
Sunday and Monday are better if your schedule allows. Saturday is the peak crowd day of the weekend and often of the season.
