When Guanella Pass Fall Colors Peak in 2026
This season is not following the usual calendar. Colorado is in serious drought — nearly 94% of the state was under some drought as of early September, with around 44% in extreme or exceptional conditions. Drought-stressed aspens turn earlier, can look duller or browner, and drop their leaves faster than in a wet year.
Expect peak roughly seven to ten days ahead of a normal year.

The Route
Take I-70 west from Denver to Georgetown at exit 228 — around 45 minutes without traffic. From Georgetown the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway climbs south for about 22 miles to Grant on US 285.
The road is paved for its full length but narrow, steep and heavily switchbacked, with no cell coverage across long stretches near the summit. Most visitors drive up from Georgetown, spend time at the top and return the same way. Continuing to Grant is scenic but adds significant time to the loop back.

The aspens are not spread evenly along the byway. Three sections do the work.
Lower Georgetown stretch — miles 1 to 6
Dense aspen right at the roadside, closing overhead in places. Lower elevation means it peaks later, often still excellent in early October when the summit is bare. Several small pullouts, all of which fill early.
Clear Lake and the mid-mountain benches
Aspen stands open against dark conifer here, which is where the contrast photographs best. Early-morning reflections on still water are why photographers arrive before sunrise.
The summit basin
Above treeline the aspens give way to tundra, so the summit is not about leaves — it is about the view back down over the gold and across to Mount Blue Sky and the Sawtooth ridge. Also where weather turns hostile fastest.

Parking: The Thing That Ruins Most Trips
Guanella Pass has limited formal parking and it is enforced. The summit lot and popular trailheads fill by mid-morning on peak weekends, and shoulder parking is restricted along much of the byway — the road is too narrow to accommodate it safely.
In practice: arriving at 11am on a peak Saturday, you may drive the entire pass without being able to stop. The colour will be there and you will see it through a windscreen.

What to Prepare For
Altitude. The summit is over 11,600 feet. Visitors arriving from sea level within 24 hours frequently feel it. Drink water, move slowly, skip the hike if you feel off.
Weather. Late September at the summit can mean snow, sustained wind and temperatures well below freezing while Denver sits in the seventies. Layers and a windproof shell regardless of the forecast in town.
Smoke. 2026 has been an active fire season in western Colorado. Check air quality before a long scenic drive — haze affects visibility even when the sky looks clear.
No fuel or services between Georgetown and Grant. Fill up and bring water.
