The Steamboat Springs Name

It may come as a surprise, but there is no real steamboat in Steamboat Springs. Instead, the town got its name from the “chug chug” sound created by the hot springs.

Location

The Yampa Valley in Colorado is about 160 miles northwest of Denver. Take I-70 west from Denver through the Eisenhower Tunnel to the Silverthorne exit; then north on Colorado Highway 9 to Kremmling, then west on US Highway 40 to Steamboat Springs. Take I-80 east from Salt Lake City (390 miles), merge onto U.S. 40 east (exit 148), and follow U.S. 40 into Steamboat Springs.

Weather

The winter ski season normally lasts from November 23 to April 15th, with an average yearly snowfall of 349 inches. Daytime temperatures in the winter range from 15 to 35 degrees.

Summer begins in June and normally lasts through September, with average temperatures ranging from 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with low humidity, and cold nights.
