The useful thing to know before any Colorado ski pass comparison is that for the 2026/27 season, Ikon and Epic share no resorts at all. Not one. So this isn’t really a value question — it’s a question of which half of Colorado you want access to, and the answer depends far more on where you’ll actually ski than on the price difference.

Whichever you pick, the drive is the same. Call (720) 694-7791.

The Colorado Split

Five unlimited resorts each, plus one marquee destination on limited days. It’s a remarkably even split, which is why the decision comes down to specifics rather than headline value.

What Changed for 2026/27

Two things worth knowing if you’re comparing against last season.

Arapahoe Basin goes unlimited on the Ikon Base pass, up from a limited number of days. For Summit County skiers that’s a meaningful upgrade — A-Basin has the longest season in Colorado and routinely runs into May or June.

Snowmass days have been added to the Ikon Base, which previously gave no Aspen access at that tier.

Both Vail Resorts and Alterra are also running discounts for skiers under 30 this season, which changes the maths considerably if you qualify.

Choosing by Where You’ll Actually Ski

If Breckenridge or Vail is the trip, you need Epic. There’s no workaround — Vail Resorts owns them and no other pass gets you on the lift.

If Copper or Winter Park is the trip, you need Ikon. Same logic in reverse.

If you’re coming for a week and staying in Summit County, look at what’s within driving distance of your lodging. Breckenridge and Keystone sit close together on Epic. Copper and A-Basin sit close together on Ikon. Our shuttle comparison guide covers the drive times between them.

If you’re chasing spring skiing, Ikon has the stronger hand — A-Basin’s season routinely outlasts everything else in the state.

If the town matters as much as the mountain, Epic’s Colorado lineup includes Vail and Crested Butte, both of which are destinations in their own right.

Full Pass or Local Tier?

Both passes sell a cheaper tier, and both come with trade-offs that matter specifically over holidays.

The Ikon Base includes blackout dates over the Christmas and New Year period, around MLK weekend and around Presidents’ Day weekend — the three busiest stretches of the season. If your only trip is over one of those, the Base tier may not cover it.

The Epic Local tier excludes some resorts and restricts days at others.

Check the current blackout dates on the official sites before buying — if you’re planning around Presidents’ Day weekend or the holidays, this is the detail that decides which tier works.

The Honest Question First: Do You Need a Pass?

A season pass makes sense from roughly four or five ski days a season, depending on tier and where you ski. Below that, day tickets bought in advance frequently cost less than a pass you won’t fill.

For a single week-long trip, run the numbers on a multi-day lift ticket at your chosen resort before committing to a pass. For two or more trips, the pass usually wins — and both passes include partner discounts on lodging and rentals that shift the calculation further.

Prices Move Through the Season

Deliberately not quoted here, because both passes rise in price as the season approaches and the tiers change year to year. Published figures from different sources vary widely for exactly that reason.

Buy early if you’ve decided — both passes are cheapest in spring and climb through autumn. Check current pricing directly on the Epic Pass and Ikon Pass sites rather than relying on a figure in an article.

Getting There Doesn’t Change

Whichever pass you hold, the resorts sit along the same corridors. Epic’s Summit County resorts and Ikon’s Copper and A-Basin are all reached through the Eisenhower Tunnel. Winter Park is the exception on either pass, reached over Berthoud Pass — which is why it avoids the worst of the I-70 traffic, as our traffic guide explains.

Colorado’s traction law applies on I-70 regardless of what’s in your pocket. See our rates or call (720) 694-7791.
