Red Rocks parking is free, which is the first thing everyone learns and the least useful. What actually matters is that the lots fill hours before showtime, that they sit at different elevations, and that which one you end up in decides whether you walk down into the amphitheatre or climb a long stairway up to it.
That’s the thing people wish they’d known. Call (720) 694-7791 if you’d rather skip it entirely.

Free Isn’t the Same as Easy
There’s no charge to park at Red Rocks on a show night, and staff direct arriving vehicles to the best available lot as they fill.
The catch is in that phrase. “Best available” at 5pm means something very different from “best available” at 7:30pm on a sold-out night. Arrive late and you take what’s left, which is usually the furthest option with the longest walk.
Lots open well before showtime. Tailgating is part of the culture there, and plenty of people arrive two or three hours early specifically to get a close spot and make an evening of the car park.
The Elevation Problem
This is the part that genuinely surprises first-time visitors, and it’s why Red Rocks parking isn’t just about distance.
The amphitheatre is carved into a hillside. The upper lots sit above it, so you enter near the top of the seating and walk down to your row. Easy going in — and an uphill climb on the way out, in the dark, at altitude, after three hours on your feet.
The lower lots sit below, which means climbing a long stairway up to reach the venue before the show even starts.
Either way you’re covering a serious elevation change on foot at around 6,400 feet. There’s no flat option. For anyone with knee problems, breathing difficulties, or young children, it’s worth planning around rather than discovering.
If someone in your group has mobility concerns, look into the venue’s accessible parking and drop-off provisions in advance — spaces are limited and generally require arriving early. Check current arrangements on the official Red Rocks site.

What Time to Arrive
| Arrival | What you’ll find |
|---|---|
| 3+ hrs before | Close lot, tailgating, your pick |
| 2 hrs before | Good lot, comfortable walk |
| 90 min before | Workable on most nights |
| 60 min before | Far lot on a sold-out show |
| 30 min before | Furthest available, long walk, queue to enter |
On a sold-out night, the difference between arriving at five and arriving at seven is roughly a fifteen-minute walk each way plus a considerably worse exit.
Getting Out Is Worse Than Getting In
Everyone leaves within about ten minutes of the final song, through a small number of narrow park access roads.
Expect 45 to 90 minutes to clear the lots on a full house. That’s after you’ve walked back to the car. On a cold November night, that total — walk, wait, crawl out — is the part of the evening people remember least fondly.
Rideshare doesn’t solve it either. Thousands of people request cars simultaneously in an area with limited roads and patchy cell coverage, which produces steep surge pricing, 20 to 45 minute waits, and cancelled requests. Our full Red Rocks transportation guide compares all the options.
The Alternative to Red Rocks Parking
A private vehicle drops you at the closest permitted point and returns to a corner you agreed before the show. No lot, no walk from the far end, no queue to get out, and nobody in the group staying sober to drive a mountain park road at midnight.
| Vehicle | Capacity | Suits |
|---|---|---|
![]() Cadillac CT6 | Up to 3 | Couples, a date night |
![]() GMC Yukon XL | Up to 6 | Friends, often beats two surge fares |
![]() Cadillac Escalade ESV | Up to 6 | A bigger night out |
![]() Executive Sprinter | Up to 13 | Groups, birthdays, corporate outings |
![]() Ford Transit High Roof | Up to 14 | Larger parties travelling together |
Venue trips are booked hourly rather than point-to-point, because the vehicle holds your return. See our rates.
If You Are Driving, Five Things Help
Arrive earlier than feels necessary — two hours on a sold-out night, three if you want a close spot.
Note where you parked. The lots look identical in the dark and the hillside disorients people.
Dress for the walk, not the seat. At 6,400 feet the temperature drops hard after sunset, even in summer.
Agree a meeting point with your group before you go in. Cell service in the park is unreliable and everyone is calling at once afterwards.
And check the current bag policy before you leave home — restrictions are enforced at the gate, and a trip back to the car costs you the support act.
Visiting on a Non-Show Day
None of the above applies if you come outside an event. The park is open to the public on non-event days, free to visit, and parking is straightforward without a crowd.
A weekday morning is ideal — you get the amphitheatre, the trails and the views without the logistics. Our guide to places to visit in Denver covers pairing it with a wider day out.
Hours vary and the venue closes to general visitors on event days, so check before travelling. Call (720) 694-7791.
