There is no single best time to ski Colorado, and anyone who gives you one has decided what you want without asking. Deep snow, empty slopes and low prices are three different things, and in a normal season they almost never arrive in the same week. Pick which of the three matters most and the calendar sorts itself out.

The Best Time to Ski Colorado for Snow

Late January through March, and March more often than people expect.

Colorado’s snowpack typically peaks in late March rather than midwinter, which surprises visitors who assume January is the deep month. January brings the coldest, driest snow — the light stuff Colorado is known for — but the base is still building. By March the mountain is as covered as it gets, and terrain that was closed in December is open.

The trade-off is that March sun softens snow by midday. Firm, fast mornings and slushy afternoons. Excellent if you expect it; frustrating if you booked expecting January powder.

The Best Time to Ski Colorado for Empty Slopes

Early December and the first half of April, with midweek January close behind.

The week before the holidays is the genuinely underrated one. Most of the terrain is open, the snow is building, and the resorts are quiet because nobody has started their Christmas break. Lodging costs a fraction of what it will ten days later.

April is the other quiet window. Prices drop sharply after the spring break weeks, the mountains empty out, and in a good year conditions hold well into the month — Arapahoe Basin routinely runs into May or June. The risk is variability, since some Aprils deliver and some don’t.

Midweek in January is the third option. Tuesday to Thursday after the holiday crowd has gone home is as close to having a major Colorado resort to yourself as the season offers.

The Weeks to Avoid If You Can

Three stretches concentrate demand harder than anything else.

Christmas to New Year is the busiest period of the season, with lodging, flights and transport all at capacity from around 20 December to 3 January.

Presidents’ Day weekend is arguably worse on the mountain itself — the holidays spread across two weeks while this compresses a national long weekend into three days. Our Presidents’ Day guide covers the timing.

Mid-March draws Texas and southern school breaks into Colorado simultaneously, and it runs for weeks rather than days.

If your dates are fixed to one of these, that’s fine — just book transport four to six weeks ahead rather than assuming availability.

What to Pack for a Ski Trip to Colorado

What Kind of Skier Are You?

Chasing powder? January and February, midweek, and be willing to move at short notice when a storm lands.

Bringing children or beginners? Late March and early April. Softer snow, warmer days, and conditions that make a first ski trip enjoyable rather than cold and discouraging.

On a budget? Early December or April. Both offer real skiing at a fraction of peak pricing.

Only free over a holiday? Pick the resort carefully. Winter Park avoids the worst of the I-70 traffic because it’s reached over Berthoud Pass rather than the Eisenhower Tunnel — our traffic guide explains why that matters.

Which Day You Travel Matters As Much As Which Month

Whatever month you pick, Saturday morning westbound and Sunday afternoon eastbound on I-70 are the two worst windows of any week — and they’re worse than a quiet month’s crowds would suggest.

Arriving Thursday or flying home Monday changes the trip more than most people expect. On a holiday weekend the departure shifts to Monday afternoon instead, which catches out anyone working from the usual pattern.

Colorado’s traction law runs on I-70 from September through May regardless of the month you choose. Check conditions on COtrip.org, and see our rates or call (720) 694-7791.
