Why Keystone Is the Favourite
Vail Resorts has stated that Keystone plans to open as soon as possible in October and hopes to claim the title of first resort open in North America for the second year running. That is an explicit, public commitment to the race, and the mountain has the snowmaking capacity and the institutional will to back it.
Last season Keystone delivered. It opened on October 25, 2025 — its earliest start since 1997 — running a three-hour afternoon session on more than two miles of groomed terrain.
Why Arapahoe Basin Might Take It Back
A-Basin is the most persistent early opener in the state and it does not announce far ahead. It sits at high elevation, holds cold well, and has taken the title repeatedly.
It also came within a day of winning last season. A-Basin announced it would open Sunday, October 26. Keystone, which had said nothing all week, then posted that it was opening in an hour and a half — and took the title that same afternoon.
A-Basin’s earliest opening on record is October 9, 2022. If a cold snap arrives in early October, it is entirely capable of settling this before anyone else is ready.
The Wildcards
Loveland Ski Area sits high on the Continental Divide with strong snowmaking and a long history of October openings. It is targeting roughly mid-October into early November.
Winter Park has left its date open, describing opening day simply as “as soon as possible,” and matched its earliest opening ever in a recent season.
Wolf Creek is the one nobody predicts. It relies on natural snow rather than snowmaking, and when a southern Colorado storm lands early, it can jump the entire field — as it did on October 22, 2024, beating both Keystone and A-Basin that year.
